In 1971, Mr. Leon Howard Sullivan joined the General Motors Board of Directors and became the first black American on the board of a major corporation. He went on to serve on General Motors' board for over 20 years.
In 2008, there were 278 black directors sitting on Fortune 500 company boards, an increase from 255 in 2004. However, they collectively held fewer board seats 413 compared with 449 in 2004, according to a report by the Executive Leadership Council, a group that works to develop black leadership in the US.
