SpaceX Announces Expanded Testing of Global Cellular Starlink System

SpaceX is planning the expansion of its cellular Starlink system trials. The Company aims to leverage its Starlink satellite constellations to deliver "Direct to Cell" connectivity to a wider range of users around the world.
The initial phase of the expanded testing program will focus on four key markets: Canada, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand. Scheduled to commence on May 1st, 2024, these trials will run for a period of 180 days. The company is currently seeking regulatory approvals to potentially include New Zealand, Chile, Peru, and Switzerland in a later stage.
During the testing phase, SpaceX will be evaluating the effectiveness of its "Direct to Cell" satellites in beaming internet data directly to unmodified smartphones. SpaceX is collaborating with carriers – AT&T in the US, Rogers in Canada, Optus in Australia, and KDDI in Japan – to ensure seamless integration with existing cellular networks.
This initiative underscores SpaceX's commitment to bridging the digital divide and fostering global connectivity. The upcoming launch of 840 new Starlink satellites equipped with direct-to-cell functionality will strengthen the company’s capacity to provide this service on a global scale.
For T-Mobile subscribers in the United States, the cellular Starlink system is anticipated to launch commercially later this year. Initial offerings will focus on text messaging, with voice and data capabilities planned for rollout in 2025.
SpaceX remains dedicated to developing and deploying cutting-edge solutions that expand internet access on a global scale. The cellular Starlink system holds immense potential for connecting underserved communities and fostering a more inclusive digital landscape.
