A.G. Gaston was born in 1892 in the racially segregated Demopolis, Alabama. He never went beyond the 10th grade in school but against all odds became a multi-millionaire businessman. He founded the Booker T. Washington Insurance Co. in Birmingham in 1923 with $500. His business empire grew to include two radio stations, two cemeteries, the Citizen's Federal Savings Bank in downtown Birmingham, and more. He sold Booker T. Washington Insurance Co., in 1987 and worked at Federal Savings Bank until 6 months before his death on January 19, 1996. Networth at time of death, $130 million.
