Franklin Leonard is also the creator of the Black List, an annual ranking of the year's best unproduced scripts, picked by some 300 Hollywood, New York, and London film insiders. Many of these scripts are subsequently produced: Oscar winners Juno and There Will Be Blood are alums, and this past year's critically acclaimed The Road and Zombieland got made after appearing on the 2007 Black List.

Besides his full-time work on The Black List, Leonard is currently an adviser to Plympton,[6] a literary studio that specializes in serialized fiction, and BoomGen Studios, where he assisted in developing the transmedia graphic novel 1001.[5] He is also a Judge on the Afrinolly Short Film Competition; Africa's most prestigious Short Film Competition with a $25,000 first place cash prize to winners.

Mr. Leonard was ranked #57 on Fast Company magazine's list of the 100 Most Creative People in Business 2010.

Mr. Leonard was Vice President, Creative Affairs, Overbrook Entertainment, November 2010 – October 2012. He was the director of development and production at Universal Pictures, August 2008 – November 2010. 

Prior to working at Universal Mr. Leonard ran Los Angeles-based development for Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella's Mirage Enterprises during the final year of its existence. He has done similar work at Leonardo DiCaprio's Warner Brothers-based shingle Appian Way and former studio head John Goldwyn's company at Paramount.

Mr. Leonard has worked as a business analyst at McKinsey & Co., a weekly columnist for the Trinidad Guardian in Port-au-Spain, Trinidad, and the communications director for John Cranley's campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives in Ohio's first district.
